    Overview

    The city of Fridley Minnesota is located in Anoka County and has a population of 27,208 residents. It was incorporated in 1949 as a village initially but became a certified city in 1957. Fridley is part of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. Fridley is known as a “first ring” or “inner ring” suburb in the northern section of the Twin Cities. It connects the city of Minneapolis from its southern border. The neighboring first ring suburbs include Columbia Heights to the south and Brooklyn Center to the West across the beautiful Mississippi River.

    Residents of Fridley Minnesota enjoy a small town charm with big city amenities due to its convenient location. There are 38 publicly maintained parks in the city and residents can enjoy a number of recreational programs on any of these. Fridley offers a number of summer youth sports activities such as T-ball. This is a 5-session instructional program for boys and girls to learn the basic skills, rules and strategies of baseball. Every Tuesday evenings residents can participate on beginner tennis lessons at the Commons Park tennis courts. Lessons are held on the lower courts at the north end of Commons Park. There is also soccer camp, cheer camp, tae kwon do lessons, parent/child soccer and track and field. Fridley also hosts the “Picture this!” photo contest. The photographs showcase camera work from all around the city and is open to young photographers aged 12-18 years old.  The Great Fridley Get Together is a fair that helps foster camaraderie among residents and celebrates gathering together, apart.  The city will help recreate the Fair at the safety and convenience of your own backyard.  When residents register their party with the city, they will receive free goodies to help make the party livelier such as carnival game ideas/rules, prizes, treats, recipes and much more.

    History

    The first settler in Fridley was John Banfill who in 1847 settled and built the Banfill Tavern. During that time the area was called Manomin. Currently, the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts sits on that area.  In 1851, Abram Fridley, for whom the city was eventually named for settled. In 1879 the Minnesota State Legislature changed the name to Fridley and it was only in 1949 that it achieved its incorporation as a village. The first mayor was Carl Hartman who also served as the first police and fire chief of the new community. By 1957, the Village of Fridley became a Home Rule Charter City and about the same time, Fridley experienced an industrial boom. By the end of the 1950s the population in the village grew to over fifteen thousand residents.

    The public schools in the city belong to the Fridley Independent School District 14 and is composed of Fridley High School, Fridley Middle School, Hayes Elementary School and Stevenson Elementary School.  The city also has Totino-Grace High School, a private Roman Catholic High School, Al-Amai School a private Islamic K-12 school.  A small part of the northern area of Fridley belongs to the Anoka-Hennepin School District 11. Students in the eastern area attend Columbia Heights School District 13. Most students in the northeastern part of the city attend the Spring Lake Park School District 16.

    Zantigo Mexican Restaurant – The number one restaurant in the city as rated by Trip Advisor. They serve amazing Mexican food. Do try the delicious nachos, enchiladas and refried beans. The churros for dessert are absolutely a blast.  Restaurant is clean and service is prompt.  The tacos and fajitas are the best.

    King’s Restaurant — They serve the best lunch buffet selection in the city. The Korean ribs are absolutely amazing.  Service is excellent and the ambience is great. The food is always piping hot and is always being replenished due to the number of people lining up to eat. They serve some of the best Kim Chi in the Twin Cities at a price that is very reasonable.

    BoB’s Produce Ranch – The best go-to grocer for fresh food and meats. It is a family-owned enterprise that features a grocery, deli, meat department and bakery. Prices are reasonable and the products are amazing. They have a nice salad and sandwich bar that makes perfect lunches and dinners. There is a large dining area to eat inside the store. They also have a Colorado Peach sale every August. Peaches are sold by the bushel here at BoB’s.

    Fun Things to Do in Fridley

    Springbrook Nature Center – This is a 127-acre park composed of uniquely diverse native habitats and wildlife. It features 3 miles of hiking trails, nature prairies, Oak and Aspen Forests, extensive wetlands, floating boardwalks, Oak Savannah and there is also an interpretative center with live animals and exhibits.

    Wildlife Watching – Fridley is home to a variety of wildlife including deer, turkey, birds, coyotes and much more.  There are 200 species of birds that live or pass through the Springbrook Nature Center every year and over 1500 species of mammals, reptiles, fish, and amphibians. There are also 350 species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers here.

    Educational Programs – There are many fun educational programs for all ages on environmental education. Check out some bird banding, animal feedings, nature camps, on and off site school programs and playful polliwogs.
